ICS · Vall d’Hebron University Hospital 2011
Investments and New Equipment
Financial year 2011 was characterized by investments
made with financing from third parties such as the VHIR,
CEMCAT/FEM, IDI and CatSalut. Some work begun in
2010 was finished, whereas work continued on key pro-
jects such as the Surgery Block for the future of Vall d’He-
bron University Hospital.
Major Investments in Construction Projects
and Equipment Completed in 2011
Paediatric Intensive Care Unit
The new Paediatric Intensive Care Unit has an area of
1,300 m
2
and a total of 16 treatment beds, six of which
have positive/negative pressure systems for patients with
infections and/or immunodepressed patients, six have
positive pressure for patients with infectious diseases and
four beds are open.
The equipment includes technical stations with facilities
suitable for different kinds of monitoring and dispensing
equipment, 10,000-lux directable surgical lights with infra-
red light, and a remote surveillance system for monitoring
patients.
This new facility began operating in July 2011 in the Mater-
nal/Child Area and replaced the old UCIP that was created
almost fifty years ago with an area of 470 m
2
. That facility
had become obsolete and was not adapted to the needs of
modern equipment. This project was called for and planned
for a long time and is now a reality that will help improve
the work of professionals and the quality of the care provi-
ded to patients and their families. A total of ¤5.5 million was
spent on UCIP equipment.
Psychiatry Emergency Area
In July 2011, the new facilities were inaugurated of the
Psychiatry Emergency Room, which has an area of 337 m
2
.
This new area is located on Floor 1, odd numbers, of the
General Area. This new emergency room has major impro-
vements compared to the previous facility and will make it
possible to guarantee greater quality and safety for users.
The facility is larger and now has five treatment beds ins-
tead of two, a continuous care room for patients in crisis
situations and a waiting room for family members. All
these changes were aimed at improving the quality of the
care provided to users and to facilitate the work of the
hospital professionals.
Immediate Care Consultation Service / Home
Hospitalization
The Immediate Care Consultation Service (CAI) for onco-
logy patients has an area of 281 m
2
and is connected to the
future Surgery Block (under construction) and the critical
care units. It is designed to expedite surgery and critical
patient circuits. All the patients treated at Medical and
Haematology Oncology services are given the number of a
call centre where they can call 24 hours a day to make con-
tact with the Immediate Care Consultation Service in the
event of an emergency.
Electricity Centre and Networks
Two emergency diesel generators with approximately 5 WM
of power were installed.
Construction Work and Projects in Progress
In 2011, major work started or continued in the following
areas:
• The Surgery Block is the most important construction
project. It will involve the addition of 19 operating rooms,
56 intensive care and reanimation beds, and a total area of
more than 10,300 m
2
. The work on the Surgery Block con-
tinued steadily in 2011 and a study was done on integrated
and hybrid operating rooms. The hybrid operating rooms
will be partially equipped in 2012 like the other operating
rooms, for which calls for quotes on equipment are sche-
duled for pre-installation during 2012.
• The second phase of the Multiple Sclerosis Centre buil-
ding (CEMCAT), a project that is the result of cooperation
between the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and “la Caixa”
savings bank. The centre will have a total area of 2,144 m
2
(the first phase involved laying the foundations and set-
ting up the structure of the building and was completed in
early 2011).
• The development of an agreement between the ICS and
the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE)
for the construction of a cogeneration plant has led to a
call for quotes on a project with a budget of ¤4.9 million
financed by the IDAE, and with dedicated resources for
the creation of a unit that includes a 4.2 MW turbine.
• The PET/TAC (project of the Institute for Diagnostic Ima-
ging), with an area of 375 m
2
, located in the basement of
the General Area building.
• The remodelling of Floor 13 of the Maternal/Child Area
building (VHIR Project; 803 m
2
).
• The continuation of the electricity network that supplies
the Trauma Care building.
Within the framework of the project to expand the hospital
in 2011, steps were taken to implement the 2010 agreement
between the Ministry of Health and Barcelona City Council
on planning a building to hold outpatient consultation
rooms and other outpatient activities. The place chosen for
the construction of this building is the area known as “La
Teixonera” and is located across the street from the current
hospital. The project will have a total built area of 35,000 m
2
for healthcare use as part of a larger project that will inclu-
de other neighbourhood services.
